Often times if you hope to see the Northern Lights UP North, you have to either be a night owl or an early bird, meaning either late at night or in the wee hours of the morning. Kevin Dunham said today’s Aurora beauty was recently snapped between 1:00 and 2:00 a.m., so he wins the early bird title for the wee hours of the morning. He captured these shots over-looking Munising Bay, with the town lights also glowing, off on the right. I love the streaks reaching UP higher and the stars you can see above the Aurora, especially in the third shot. It looks like there are millions of twinkling stars. Just pure beauty!

And as if the photos aren’t enough, Shannon from 906 Images shares a “Starlapse” of the Northern Lights on the same morning, at the same time today’s photos were taken, only this was shot in the Marquette area. Shannon explained that this “Starlapse” was made with a mode that is built into his camera, along with a bit of editing, this timelapse is the result, knitting it all together quite nicely. Neat how he captured the lights dancing, the clouds passing by and the reflections in Lake Superior. Such an outstanding display!

Outstanding display, indeed!
I would get up in the wee
hours of the morning to
enjoy this spectacle;
To witness the Earth’s
protective shield.
Is that a bridge or a
walkway in the first pic???

Hi
I would also stay up (or get up) to see the Northern
Lights if I could see them with my naked eyes---not
via a cell phone or camera. I did once see them that
way, while driving at night in the northern lower
peninsula, so I know it's possible.

I've seen them with the naked eye once
in Minnesota. It was awesome. And I
agree, it's much better that way.
These are completely spectacular!

I've seen them with the naked eye so many times,
and I wish I could again.

There was one time, decades ago, when my nephew
called me in the wee hours of the morning..he said
"Don't say anything, just go outside"...so I went
outside, and the red northern lights were right
down to the ground, EVERYWHERE....I danced on the
road at 4am in Red....absolutely stunning! I have
never experienced anything like that before or
since!

These are so beautiful!

Hi
The time I saw them, my mom & I were driving up from
Jackson to Cheboygan after dark. Down by Grayling it
was that radar screen green. My dad was already up
at the cabin, in bed. When we got there we got him
up and we all went down to the beach. It looked like
someone was walking behind a curtain, with greens
and purples and reds.

Bob & I saw the Northern Lights a few times on
snowmobile vacations. The best one was at 10 p.m.
walking back from the Mariner to our motel room.
