H Donn de Yampert took a drive recently, stopping for a photo of a river crossing on the Bill Nichols Trail near Twin Lakes. The printing on the sides of the crossing says FORGIVEN II. I’m not sure what that refers to, maybe a movie or a book. Let us know if you have any idea.

From there, Donn drove on to Ontonagon and snapped a few photos of the Ontonagon Lighthouse and the West Pierhead Lighthouse, flying in up close with his drone on the latter. Donn mentioned that the Pierhead light is a bit run down and also that the main Lighthouse is closed currently. I’m guessing because the tourist season hasn’t started UP yet.

The Porcupine Mountains shares an interview with Dean Juntunen, President of the Ontonagon Historical Society. He gives us a look back at the rich tapestry of Ontonagon County. From its indigenous roots and early settlers to its pivotal role in the mining boom of the 19th century, join him on a journey through Ontonagon History.

Beautiful pictures. I love
Ontonagon! I haven't spent a lot
of time there, but it's a
beautiful area.

If i recall correctly they sold - or tried to sell- the pierhead lighthouse. Hope someone will get it restored this Summer. Years ago the only way to see the main lighthouse was to go on a tour via boat with the historical society. We planned to do that tour but never hit it when they were open. Now you can drive right to it.

Ontonagon Breakwater Lighthouse

Starting bid: $5,000

Ontonagon is the westernmost light on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The tower, which stands on four stilts at the entrance of the channel leading to the Ontonagon River from Lake Superior, is nearly 120 years old.

Hey UC, why did we need a new Alma Mater? What was wrong with the old one?

UC, saw this story on Channel 6:

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees has approved room and board rates for the 2024-2025 academic year, as well as a new alma mater anthem.

In addition to securing room and board rates. the board also announced a new alma mater anthem that will debut in September as part of the university’s 125th anniversary celebration.

“Northern Pride” by NMU professor Dwight Brady. His piece was selected from 14 original submissions to a selection committee.
