Tahquamenon Falls in Paradise, Michigan is always an impressive falls to stop and see, but this time of year it’s absolutely incredible. We’re lucky to have Frances Czapski from Photography by Frances sharing her recent photos and the bonus of a video, too! I love the description Frances had with her photos: Spring Flow at the Upper Tahquamenon Falls. So much power; effortless beauty!”
If you’re wondering why the falls is the dark brown color, it is because the river flows through cedar and hemlock swamps and the tannins from plants and bark leach into the water, coloring it brown like that. The falls are often referred to as “Root Beer Falls”.
Frances’ video is nothing short of spectacular, showing the upper falls at peak flow. I always remind your to turn up your volume. For this one, the roar of the falls is almost deafening, so adjust accordingly.

We saw them for the first time last fall. They're so impressive. They're about as good as the High Falls on the Pigeon River in very Northern MN. The video was awesome!

Beautiful Pic's & relaxing video!! We'll be seeing the Falls again, as we make our way U.P. in July, really looking forward to it!

It's odd because for many of the videos posted here, I can not see them directly from this page; I have to go to the link provided as is the case today.
One thing I will point out is that one of the comments in Frances' page about iron staining the water is not true; this is purely from the tannins in the cedar/hemlock swamps the river flows through. These pics are a far cry from what one sees in late summer after the snowmelt. Another area to explore this time of year (carefully, I might add!) are the falls along the Black River north of Bessemer.

I had the same experience Capt. Paul, I always saw them in the
summer because of the motorcycle and they were never running
like they are in the video.

As stated from site #31, page 74, of Michigan Rocks, the Falls are part of the Cambrian Escarpment, with the Au Train Formation as the caprock of the Falls.
Seriously, can you tell i'm enjoying our just arrived copy of Capt. Paul's book?

Capt, I love those falls. But people should know that there are so many steps to get down to all of them. The climb up is not for the weak. I had a difficult time a few years ago. I know I could not do them now. Very happy I got to see them, though. It's a gorgeous area.
