We’re seeing different birds than what we’ve been seeing all winter, at our feeders in the Keweenaw. Thanks to two Deb’s we have some shots of those birds of a feather that flock together. By the way, that’s an old proverb that means people or critters of the same sort or with the same interests will be found together. In the case of today’s birds, that pretty much describes the various finches and small birds.

First off we have three photos that Deb Simons snapped at her feeders in Lake Linden. A male Purple Finch with several Goldfinches on her feeder. You can see the Goldfinches are shedding their darker feathers and turning into the bright yellow feathers they sport for the summer months. Then Deb captured a Yellow-Rumped Warbler at the feeder with a Goldfinch friend. Check out the raindrops along the railing, too. Deb’s third photo is a Mourning Dove. I think they normally eat off the ground, but sometimes will get on the feeders, too.

The next three photos come to us from Debbie Jarve. She spotted a Goldfinch and an unidentified bird in her first of the three shots. Then a nice shot of a male Purple Finch...it looks like he might have a seed in his mouth. And her third picture is a female Purple Finch. I like the way she has her feet wrapped around the feeder perch, making sure she’s steady and ready for her lunch.

In case you’re wondering about navigating your way north to Copper Harbor with the Silver River Bridge closure on M-26, Visit Keweenaw shares a video with information, along with a link to their webpage. Click here for detour options: Silver River Bridge Detour Options

We sit and watch these creatures for a couple of
hours every morning. I never tire of them. I was
surprised to see how many of them peck at the suet
on the feeders. Usually just the Bluejays and
Woodpeckers do that.
I'm thinking Debbie's "friend" in her picture may
be a female Junco. But I'm not positive.

Oh how beautiful! Thank you all for these cool
pics!

Her friend could also be a female cowbird.

Neat set of sweet tweets! Thank you, ladies.

Very nice selection ladies! I'm not sure i've ever seen a Yellow-Rumped Warbler!!

Sure hope all this snow hasn't pushed the 10-week construction schedule for the Silver River Bridge out too far. I'm sure they're used to this!

OK Ladies, it seems like you've all gone to the birds. Deb has me convinced I should put up a feeder now, almost.

It's a shame what's happened to the Silver River bridge on M-26. When I first heard about it here I couldn't find a good picture of the damage. I hardly ever drive 41 to Copper Harbor except during peak color or I'm in a hurry, it's much less exciting than the Lakeside roller coaster.
Silver River Bridge

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, May 4, 2023 - 08:42 am:

It is such a shame, D.A. We only used 41 in the
fall also, for the same reason. And we always only
went that way either coming or going. We always
used 26 one of the ways. And Silver River was
always a must stop and a nice walk. I'm very sad
about it. I hope they replicate that bridge,
though I'm sure they won't.
