When Debbie Jarve is out and about, whether it’s on her way to work or on her way home, she always has her camera at the ready to capture what’s happening around the Keweenaw. She recently snapped some shots of a bit of fog along the canal in Houghton. That first shot looks like it’s a fog-bow and I’m pretty sure it’s hiding the Portage Lake Lift Bridge somewhere in there. Then her next photo shows the bridge emerging from the fog... see, I was right, it was there all along! Debbie shifts her position and snaps one of the fog just hanging over the Mont Ripley ski hills, making it all look a bit eerie that day.
That sunrise she photographed near Swedetown looks like the entire sky is on fire and if I’m not mistaken, that seems to be a Sun Pillar, shooting up from the middle of it. That must be more ice crystal reflections, similar to the moon halo on Wednesday’s Pasty Cam.
Just in case you didn’t see the full moon last week, Debbie shares a shot of it here, called the Worm Moon, as it is the third and final full Moon of the northern hemisphere's winter season. It’s called the Worm Moon because it is associated with warming ground temperatures and the start of spring.
Alexis Dahl shares a lesson on the Biggest Lava Flow on Earth, which she says might be in Michigan. Her lead-in to the video says: “About a billion years ago, huge volumes of lava covered northern Michigan. About 200 years ago, those lava flows gave rise to the first major, mechanized copper mine in North America. This is the story of the Greenstone Flow and the Cliff Mine in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula.” Alexis adds: ”A special thanks to Dr. Laurel Woodruff (USGS) and Dr. Sean Gohman (Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission) for their review of her script and insight into the Greenstone Flow and the Cliff Mine.”
