We’ve had a number of big wind days recently and when that happens, folks flock to Lake Superior to witness the power of the Big Lake. Debbie Jarve was one of those folks out there braving the winds and the spray of the big waves. She captured today’s array of crashing, splashing, rocking and rolling waves so well, you can almost feel the wet spray that must have been in the air with the wind blowing it off the crest of those waves crashing against the breakwall. It never ceases to amaze me how wild Lake Superior can get when the gales of November are blowing here in the Keweenaw.

Steve Brimm was out during the wind and waves in the Copper Harbor area, too, so we get to hear the roar of Lake Superior in his video as we watch those waves rolling in and crashing against the rocky shoreline. Steve always has a way with words and titled his video: “Tad Roilly Out Today”!

Pure awesome. When I watched the Fitz ceremony, they talked about the difference between ocean and fresh water waves. In the ocean, there's salt and that mellows out waves...if a ship is in between waves with salt, the salt meets in the middle of the waves and melds them together...Fresh water doesn't have salt, so there is no mellowing...that's why it's so wild in Lady Superior. That was such an awesome ceremony, and really taught you a lot. It's still in You Tube, just not live.

Fierce set…and so the transition begins.

Hello,
We are still around, just live in Houghton now. Enjoyed the house we rented in Lake Linden, which turned out to be haunted, friendly spirits, except the one that unplugged my crock pot one night. LOL.

But, as we got older, it was getting hard for Bill to keep the driveway cleared of snow and cutting grass, so we moved to Houghton, apt.

To Alex, Thank You, for asking about us, that was very nice of you. I have to start posting more.

Just saw a blurb...there's going to be a show on HBO/MAX at 9 tonight, called "Surveilled" and it's about how foreign folks are breaking into your cell phones, using your camera, your texts, voice mails, etc....

Wow! Great job on the photos. That must have been exciting! And the video was great too.

Nice to see you back, Mickill. I wondered if you were still in Lake Linden but I get the whole shoveling thing. We don't have
anybody to help us either, so not sure how long we'll be able to stay in the house. Glad you're doing well.

The earth is a living thing. Mountains speak, trees sing, lakes can think, pebbles have a soul, rocks have power.

Hi
I have a book titled "Great Lakes Shipwrecks and
Survivals". Here is what the author, William
Ratigan, has to say about the differences between
salt and fresh water waves:

"Storms [in the Great Lakes]...pile up mountainous
seas that strike swifter, and more often, than the
deadliest waves on any ocean. Before the ship has
a chance to recover from the last blow the next is
upon her...
The waves of the Lakes strike quicker in
comparison to the more lethargic ocean waves
because they are less dense."

I didn't even see that link there.
Wow!

I'm always impressed by and respectful of The Lake's turbulence. As Kathyrn pointed out the Lake waves repeat at much greater frequency than in the ocean, typically 2 to 4 times faster. Here is a good article about this and also the dangers of rip tides in the Great Lakes. I need to learn more about the salinity aspect, Donna. Interesting.

The Dangers of Great Lakes Waves and Rip Currents

Donna,
I spent a bit of time researching and even talking to Copilot AI about salinity and waves. The best I could find or get Copilot to admit to was that it affects the large currents but not waves.

Also, I watched the HBO/Max surveillance special. Very interesting. The U.S. claims they don't use the Israeli made Pegasus software and there is a law preventing it's use here, but I would for sure bet "we" made our own version.
