H Donn de Yampert was recently on a road trip, capturing photos along the way and spotted those mountainous looking clouds in the first two photos, ahead of him near Au Train. The bottom two photos he snapped at the Au Train Beach Campground, which is on M-28, between Marquette and Munising. I don’t know much about clouds, but perhaps the top two photos are cumulus clouds? And I have no clue what the ominous looking clouds in the bottom two photos are called, but they sure look like they’re about to drop a rain storm over Lake Superior there. No matter what they’re called, they’re fascinating spectacles in the sky.
Speaking of fascinating, we have a rock tumbling video from Michigan Rocks with Rob showing us how he shines up some of the rocks he picked earlier in the year at Little Girls Point near Ironwood, on the Upper Michigan/Wisconsin border. It’s neat to see the before and after, along with the process he uses to make them “pretty”!

A Joni Mitchell set! And I remember that there was always sand drifting across M28 when I passed by Au Train Beach. Fall Equinox over the weekend. Summer was great while it lasted.

Spectacular looking clouds! When we were on our cruise, we were always looking at what they look like. We saw lots of animals. It was fun. But I think it's raining in the last 2 photos. Just beautiful.

Hi Mary, those would be "Cumulonimbus" clouds. They end up as the chief culprits of thunderstorms usually on those hot sticky days when a cold front passes thru. But sometimes they just pop up and cause a brief shower with a little thunder and lightning. Sometimes on a humid sticky summer day you can watch them build to upwards of 40 to 50 thousand feet, its an impressive sight. Fall is here and its one of my favorite times of year. I love being able to work outside and not be a sweaty mess at the end of the day!

Hi I like the first cloud picture (who put those mountains there) and the last one the best.
Iron Range Dave, I completely agree about no longer having to get sweaty while I'm walking or mowing. It'll be awhile before we get any fall color here in downstate Michigan.

Great shots! I like the 3rd one. Au Train was always a trouble spot. Either drifting sand or drifting snow! These days they just close the road when the winds whip the snow into drifts, but not back in the day! UC was probably too smart to go that way in the Winter.
