That’s right, Luna Moths are not rare in the Keweenaw, but they’re rarely seen, due to the fact that they have a very brief adult life of 7 to 10 days and they do most of their flying time at night, about an hour after sunset, to an hour before sunrise. Stacey Flood must have been a bit nocturnal herself recently, when she spotted this Luna Moth on the side of her chicken coop. She zoomed in for a few close-Ups of it’s head and said she thought it gave a “fuzzy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle-esque vibe design”. The close-UP of the wing, shows the Eye Spot that is thought to protect them from predators that would rather leave them be, than to mess around with something that has eyes that appear to be that big. Nature is just so amazing, with the designs and natural protections for the critters.

We take a look at Episode 90 of Discovering, where Kristin Ojaniemi heads to Camp Josh, a non-profit organization that helps people with special needs to get outdoors. A group of folks from the Copper Country Mental Health center join her for a fun day of fishing. Then she heads to Rice Lake, for the 50th Annual Fishting Derby and joins a family who has fished the derby for all 50 years. It was a chilly morning of fishing, but they all had a blast reeling in fish!

Very different pictures for sure.
Stacey sure did get some good
pictures of this moth. Thanks for
the info, too, Mary. I knew
nothing about these moths.

That moth is so stunning. I watched a show once, that showed different moths and butterflies and how they look....to keep predators off them!!!!! This is awesome.
Here's a short video showing how one moth keeps predators off them: Moth wings scare off predators

I love Discovering. Camp Josh and CCMH...omg...I recognized several of the folks I worked with so many years ago....and the Fishing Derby was a must, back in the day. I LOVED the little kids fishing....and them yelling "Bye" to Kristin when she boated off....that was a wonderful episode!

Another beautiful example of nature’s artistry!
And the reddish background color is perfect.
Nice work, Stacey.
I didn’t watch the entire video, but it looks
like they were having some fish fry’n fun.

The Luna looks like it may be on it's 10th day - a little worse for wear. They are so large they would make a good meal for anything looking for a midnight snack. Those eye spots come in handy.
