With today’s photos, we conclude Deb Simons and her hubby Ron’s March 2024 Keweenaw tour of the falls and the parks. As I stated in yesterday’s notes, Deb said it was windy and chilly over on the west side of Lake Superior, but of course still beautiful. The Simons Duo takes us to Brunette Park, just north of Gay, where it was warm enough there, that no jackets were needed. The beautiful white sand beach was littered with driftwood that created a few interesting shadows on the sand. Deb said she sure never thought she’d see anything like this in March...no snow or ice on the east side of Lake Superior. Here again, Deb felt like she was in Heaven on the shores of the Big Lake.

From there, they made a stop to check out the Tobacco River and how rapidly it was running. Deb thought the water was a bit low, but it was running into Lake Superior with ripples and white, frothy waves. Deb recorded a video “short” of the river, too. Again, if you want the full effect, make sure you have your volume on.

Amazing no snow out there at this time of year. Nice pics and very relaxing video. Would love to be fishing the Tobacco River right about now.
Deb, I'm guessing it's Ron's right shoulder that's getting the replacement, not the left with that driftwood log on top of it(?)

Good stuff, Deb and muscleman Ron!
I think Ron may have a little Scottish
in him, because it looks like he’s
getting ready for a caber toss.
Nice video, too.

Way cool...down at the Tobacco, where it's running
into the lake...I used to find tons of beach glass
and old pottery chips. They fixed up the area way
back then....I haven't been that way in decades.

The last time I was at Brunette Park there was far less sand on the beach. Tobacco River Park is also a great place to stop for lunch. It would make sense the rivers are not going to be running too wild this Spring.

What a beautiful day. Yes, George,
tons right shoulder will be having
a reverse replacement in a couple
of weeks. He's had so many
surgeries in that shoulder that
there's nothing left to anchor to.
He's a mess. He'll be happy to
have it done, but then there'll be
the other one to deal with. And
how cool to find all that beach
glass, Donna. I love beach glass.
And D.A., both places are great
places to stop for lunch. I prefer
Brunette just because there's much
more beach and you can take a
nice, long walk. And there really
wasn't a lot of beach back in the
day. It was all rock. It's
gorgeous there now. We have to
enjoy it before it reverts back to
the way it was.

Mary, you chose my 2 favorite
pictures from that park.

Deb, you sure timed this right! Beautiful day! And driftwood hunting is a great way to explore the beach. Praying all goes well with Ron's surgery. Have a friend who had the 'reverse' done and it has gone well.

Hey UC, how are you doing beating that covid? Praying all is well with you!

Looks like the Soo Locks are now open with the Joseph L. Block being the first through.

Here is a shot of a portion of the Brunette Park "beach" back in 2016. There were some sandy areas but also large areas of sandstone that are really an extension or emergence of the Jacobsville sandstone.
