Last week there was quite the Aurora across the skies around us UP North and we have two spectacular photos from two outstanding photographers in case you missed seeing them in person. The first photo was snapped by Steve Brimm in Copper Harbor. As if the amazing lights dancing in the sky wasn’t enough, he also captured the reflection in the waters of the Harbor. Steve titled this “Copper Harbor, we’ll leave the lights on for you...” Perfectly captured and captioned.
The second shot comes to us from Captain Eric Treece. Captain Treece is the former Captain of the Wilfred Sykes and Edward L Ryerson, and is now retired from the Lakers and moved over to Pilots (they board ships to safely guide them in and out of ports). He was aboard the Federal Bering and took this photo from the bridge as they were headed north on Lake Superior, making their way to Thunder Bay. Just look at how calm the water us around the boat.
So the first shot here today was the Copper Harbor side of Lake Superior and the second shot was from across the Big Lake closer to Canada. Pretty neat to see “bookend” Aurora photos!
Andrea Guerriero was instrumental in getting us the photo from Capt. Treece and also shares a neat video of the view from the Tower of History in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Lots to see from UP there.

Amazing…what a sight! And a very nice video, to boot. Thanks to all who contributed.

Both spectacular shots. We got some shots, though nothing like these. We didn't stay late enough to see the good stuff. I turn into a pumpkin after 11.

How does anyone get any sleep during these displays?
By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Monday, September 25, 2023 - 04:56 pm:
DA, they aren't that bright to the naked eye, not like strong moonlight coming in your window. One October, decades ago, I was lucky enough to see a bright, radar-screen green display while driving up north at night.
I also saw some while at a beach-fire with friends over Labor Day weekend. They were white but dim. It was only the movement, rippling and sending spears of light upward, that distinguished it from light on clouds. One of my friends got a picture on her cellphone & it looked brighter and more colorful. We were near Cheboygan in the northern lower and I heard they were stronger and brighter in the UP that night.

Great pics (especially the second one) and great video, I remember all the locations she pointed out.

Kathyrn,
Thanks, but I was coming from the angle of who would want to go to bed when they're this expansive. I know the camera picks up details and colors the naked eye misses. The 2 times I was fortunate enough, they were almost all white.

Isn't that the Big Dripper in the 2nd picture?
By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 - 07:35 am:
It is, John! A few of the pictures I took that night have the Big Dipper in them. It's so cool.
