It’s a colorful time of year, when the Lupines are decorating our roadsides and fields. We have a look at them here UP North from two different photographers, starting with the first two photos snapped in the Skanee area by Nancy Haun. She said there is nothing more beautiful than a field of Lupines and I would have to agree.

The bottom two photos are shared by Barbara Bouwkamp taken somewhere here in the Keweenaw. One of her friends commented that lupines are the rewards of winter. They sure are a welcome burst of color after all the months of white. Interesting that the purple flowers are much more prevalent than the pink. You can see a couple pink ones in Barbara’s photos and it looks like a few more in Nancy’s shots.

Steve Brimm joins today’s flower parade with a ‘blues breaking’ video. The pretty little flowers growing among the rocks look like wild roses. Another example of nature adapting to the surroundings, growing in the midst of rocks to burst into color!

So stunning, but I remember when we were kids..we
picked a big bouquet of these for Grandma, and that
night, all the bugs came out. HOLY WHA...each one
of those pockets holds a bug too!

They are so beautiful and they sure do spread.

Lupines are my favorite. Great combo with ferns.

Here is one of my old favorites I call...

They are beautiful! We transplanted some in
our yard last year. I think we forgot we did
that and mowed them down. We also got seeds
from some of the ones that died out last
year. We forgot where we put them, lol. I
love them with the ferns also. Maybe I'll
throw some seeds in with my ferns this year.
That way we won't mow them down.

The flowers in the video remind me of vinca.
But I think they're just annuals.

I have a great Rhododendron with purple blossoms.
But they only last about a week, some times two.

When my lawn blossoms with weeds,
I tell everyone I'm helping to support the bees.

Roan Mountain in TN has one of the largest rhododendron fields in
the US.
I was able to get there at just the right time and it was a
sight to behold.

Alex,

I agree. Roan Mountain is probably the best display, but there are many other places along the Appalachian Mountains with great displays. As you note, their short blooming season can make it difficult to participate in the viewing enjoyment.
