I was born in Hancock, and grew up in Houghton and Ann Arbor. I was in the 8th grade in 1958.
We spent several weeks each summer at the Lake Michigan cabin of a family friend, between Leland and Northport, which is not far from where the Bradley went down.
Although we had no personal connection with the crew or their families, the sinking was all the more poignant for us.
In the summer of 1963, after graduating from Ann Arbor High School, I met a young man from Rogers City, whose uncle had been a member of the crew on the Bradley. I think the man who told me the story was about 24 or 25 at the time.
He said that during a layover in Rogers City the summer before the sinking, his uncle had told him that the ship was old and in poor condition.
His uncle said that before the 1958 sailing season began the captain told the ship's owners that it was no longer seaworthy. He begged the management of the Bradley Transportation Company to put the ship in drydock for extensive repairs, but they refused.
According the uncle, the captain was told to take the ship out or find another job.
Sadly, as the saying goes, the rest is history.
