I don’t know about you, but I never tire of seeing the beautiful Auroras that light up the Keweenaw skies. Today’s group of photos were snapped by George C. Bailey, on the north shore of the Keweenaw, overlooking Lake Superior at Dans Point, west of Copper Harbor. George said he was out there between 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. to capture these beauties.
Just so you know, this isn’t a “point and shoot” kind of photography, there is a lot that goes into getting outstanding shots like these. First of all, Northern Lights come out at night, most of the time when the rest of us are fast asleep. Setting up entails maneuvering himself, the camera and the tripod into precarious spots on the Lake Superior rocks, sometimes with a two to three foot drop behind him. Then adjusting the tripod legs, the camera angle and George says he often “paints” the rocks with his flashlight. After all this for just one shot, it then takes another 15 minutes to retrace his steps in the dark with a low power flashlight back to the beach, carrying all his gear. So if you’re thinking that being a photographer is an easy job, think again!
We join Under the Radar Michigan for an episode talking with Shawn Malone, from Lake Superior Photo in Marquette. Shawn talks more about what goes into getting breathtaking photos and videos, along with the late night hours photographers often keep.
