The Swedetown Pond area, southwest of Calumet is a great place to relax. There are several fishing piers along the shore, which are accessed from the road by short paved paths. You can park in the lot provided alongside the smaller ponds. Wildlife is often seen here in these shallow marshlands, too.
Dottie Abe captured a few shots of several Trumpeter Swans at the ponds recently. These birds are said to be the heaviest flying waterfowl species native to North America, weighing in at 25 pounds or more, with a wingspan of 6 ft. 2 in. to 8 ft. 2 in. These once endangered birds need a 100-yard runway of water for their lumbering takeoff and sound like galloping horses as they get up to speed to fly off. Beautiful, graceful and so fun to observe.
Today’s video gives you a look at the Trumpeter Swan antics, honking and showing off in front of the Mute Swans. Make sure you have your speakers turned up to hear them!
