Chris Hendra over at Chris Hendra Photography captured some incredible detail with “macro” photography, which is producing photographs of small items larger than life size. I’d say snowflakes definitely quality as ‘small items’. His first two photos are nothing short of amazing, being able to see the intricate features of those tiny little flakes of snow. They look like they’re fine pieces of jewelry! Then Chris snapped the bottom photo, saying window frost season is almost over. I sure hope he’s right. This winter has seemed like an especially snowy and frigid one, with lots of wind making the days even colder. I may have mentioned this already, but I’m ready for warmer weather. Since the shipping season on Lake Superior will be starting up again in a week, I thought it would be a good time to take a look at the Amazing Engineering Behind Icebreakers, compliments of Interesting Engineering. The lead-in to the video says: “Icebreakers are specialized vessels designed for the crucial task of breaking ice to keep waterways open for global trade. Unlike other ships with streamlined designs, icebreakers have robust hulls and rounded or sloping bows to withstand ice and protect vital components like propellers. They don't plow through ice but use their shape to climb up and glide on it, crushing it in the process.”

That is so cool! And I've always loved the look of frosted on the windows. But I'll be glad when this winter is over

Interesting pix and video! Did you know that no two wool hats are alike? I bet that ship keeps a good supply of vodka and OJ just in case it gets shipwrecked.

Those pictures are absolutely stunning. And, like wool hats, no two are the same...to think as much snow as we get, not two flakes match. unreal. Vid is awesome...would that be a cool job...literally. :D

Hi The top two snowflakes remind me of a really alien life form from a Star Trek Next generation episode. In the ice-breaker video, the ship strongly reminded me of the old ice-breaker Mackinaw (after they repainted it from white to red). Alex, what do you call a drink made with vodka, orange juice and milk of magnesia? A Phillip's Screwdriver.

Good one, Kathy!

And vodka with prune juice? A piledriver (sorry........)

Nice pics, how do you get great pics of snowflakes?? Fantastic video, I always find the Ice Breakers just as fascinating as the lake freighters. Alex, Kathy, George y'all had me laughing here at my desk. I think the ship must also stock a large supply of, chips, pretzels, and peanuts too. Alex.. just in case that shipwreck does occur. :=))
