Diane Richard captured these Aurora photos at the pumphouse in L’Anse last week. Her camera was her iPhone 12 and she mentioned that she uses the Michigan Aurora Chasers webpage to find out when and where the Northern Lights will be lighting up the skies. Then it’s the luck of the draw, for how bright they’ll be and how long they’ll last. And the majority of the time, the naked eye doesn’t see the colors like in Diane’s shots, but the camera does capture the colors, which is a bonus when you get good photos of the Aurora to enjoy longer. These are definitely some beauties with the different shades of colors, like a nighttime rainbow of sorts.

Visit Keweenaw has a great clip about the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park. The lead-in says: “Fall in the Upper Peninsula makes for incredible dark sky viewing. Adventure North to the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park and take in the magic of dancing northern lights, the milky way, and countless constellations as they light up our night sky.” Learn More about the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park at Keweenaw Dark Sky Park

Beautiful set and how cool to see it in person.
The Keweenaw Dark Sky Park looks like
an interesting experience too.
So many interesting events to see and do
UP there. Beam me UP, Scotty!

Hi
There is a Dark Sky park by Mackinaw City called
the Headlands. It's far enough out of town that
the sky is dark. And it is on the shore of Lake
Michigan so that trees blocking the view, as noted
for the Keweenaw Dark Sky park, isn't an issue. Of
course I have a great dark sky and lakeshore view
at my vacation home outside of Cheboygan.

I was fortunate enough once to see color in the
northern lights with just my own eyes. We started
seeing them around Grayling and saw a great show
on our beach. That's the experience I'd be most
interested in. I doubt my little flip phone has a
sensitive enough camera, even if I wanted to view
things that way.

Hi Diane...GORGEOUS pics. I'd love to be able to do
the Keweenaw Dark Sky park.

One time when Lou and I were cruising, we were out
on Bekkala's road, (I think) and there's someone's
place out there, with a raised, window section on
the garage...we were both like, WHAT? Then I
said..."That's the perfect Dark Sky lookout"....and
it sure is....awesome!

Gorgeous pictures! We've not
caught them even once this year. I
go to bed far too early. So it's a
good thing I have pasty to see
them on.
