Last week we had some rainshowers and in between those drops of rain, Judy Byykkonen took her four legged “girls” out for a walk and she said she found sunshine! What a welcome sight to see all those yellow blooms after a gloomy day of rain, off and on throughout the hours. I looked these yellow beauties up and found them to be Jerusalem Artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), also called sunroot, sunchoke, wild sunflower, topinambur, or earth apple. They are actually a species of sunflower which is native to central North America.
From what I read further, the tubers (roots) are similar to ginger and can be eaten, the bees love them, but before you decide to try and grow them in your garden, be warned they spread easily and can take over your garden, choking out other flowers and plants. Maybe that’s why one of the names for them is “sunchoke”. Interesting! No matter what, wherever Judy found them on her walk, they sure added some beauty to her day!
We have a new video from Alexis Dahl – Behind the Scenes of a $3 Billion Megaproject. Alexis says: “The U.S. government is spending billions of dollars to build a new lock in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The Army Corps of Engineers let me past the fence, and taught me what's going on. Even if you've been to the Soo Locks, I'd bet you've never seen it like this. Many special thanks to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for hosting me, and for the thorough review of the footage.” Sit back and get comfortable, the video is just over 43 minutes long, but well worth the time to learn about the project and go behind the scenes at the Soo Locks.

These flowers are just gorgeous. I
was thinking a form of black eyed
susans, or some kind of daisy. So,
interesting.

Interesting stuff and it sounds like a Jewish
meal; “Lox and Jerusalem Artichokes.”

Beautiful! The third picture - even with the grey sky behind - is luminous! Thanks, Mary, for looking up all the particulars on these flowers. Better to enjoy them for afar!
