The Algoma Sault was heading our way earlier than usual delivering salt to the dock in Hancock. Marcy Bessolo Hermanson said she was surprised to see the 740 foot salt boat coming this early, but it was a great day to chase it near McLain Park. There were lots of people on the water that day, so they all got to enjoy seeing it coming into the canal at the Upper Entry. It’s always a thrill to see these big freighters up close like that. Marcy said she followed it from there all the way to the Lily Pond on the canal. Someone said it takes about 4 or 5 hours to unload the salt and that the Algoma headed off in the dark after unloading late in Hancock. That must have been a sight to see her sailing by in the canal all lit up.

We’re joining the Broken English Hiker for an adventure to the highest natural point in the State of Michigan, Mount Arvon. But first Suyeon and her friend fix a delicious looking picnic lunch at the Baraga State Park. Fueling up for their hike!

Very great pictures. That boat was
very early. I didn't even think to
look for it this early. But
there'll be another coming in the
next month or so. It's so cool to
watch them coming in. I always get
excited when I get to see them up
close and personal like that.

Huge ships...GREAT Hike!

Don't forget, if you get up to Mt. Arvon, there is
a mailbox up there, holding a journal in it, that
you sign to say you've been there....THEN, hit the
Visitor Center when coming into L'Anse, tell them
you were on Arvon, and they'll give you a
certificate, saying you were at the highest point
in the State of Michigan!

Interesting pix and I learned something new.
I thought the ship was delivering salt for the
winter and that Mary spelled salt incorrectly.
So I looked up the word sault and found out
that it means rapids, hence the term ;
“ Sault Ste. Marie”
My bad and shame on me for thinking that
Mary would get that wrong.

Don't feel bad, Alex. I thought
the same thing.

Deb…we both must have been sleeping
during that spelung class.

I think I was sleeping when a lot
of stuff got taught, lol.

Mt. Arvon is the highest “natural” point in Michigan, like Mary says. It’s a nice little hike. The waste rock pile at the Tilden Mine is the highest “man made” point in Michigan. I see it nearly every day. My favorite is when it is covered with snow. My late husband helped to build this. I’m sure he would be amazed at how high it has become.

So...we have a boat named the Algoma Sault that is
carrying salt but is not a saltie.

Fantastic pics and I was kind of disappointed when
reaching the top of Mt Arvon, I thought I would have
a total 360-degree view of everything, not the case.
It may be the highest elevation, but there are much
better views from lower heights as you head North
and West in my opinion.

Did you know the Algoma Sault was made in China?

Every time I see a member of the Algoma boat family, my mind wanders 45 years ago when I spent almost a week on one her sister ships, the Algoma Enterprise (Canadian Enterprise back then) as we sailed around Lake Ontario.

Same here U.C., Mt. Arvon seems like just another clearing in the middle of the woods. But I got my certificate, Donna.
