We revisit the Cliffs near Phoenix for a follow-up to Wednesday’s Pasty Cam from H Donn de Yampert. He made a trek back to the Cliff Mine site to get photos of the stone foundations and smokestack that remain there as relics of the first successful copper mine in the Copper Country. The Cliff produced copper until the 1950’s when all interest in the Cliff as a producing mine ended.

Donn also explored the Cliff Cemetery that is located slightly UP the hill from the Cliff Mine ruins. I’ve never been there, but it is not the Cliff Cemetery with a marker sign just off US-41. Interesting old markers remain as you can see in the photos. Donn mentioned that there was so much to see, respect and think about from the past to the present.

We have a video from Visit Keweenaw about the Cliff Mine, featuring Sean Gohman, Executive Director of the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission, talking more about the Cliff Mine and the Cemetery just off US-41 (not the cemetery in Donn’s photos).

Interesting set of a bygone era.
I wonder if the people that lived there
had any idea that there would be future
generations visiting their remains.
And who will visit our remains in the future?

Remains to be seen, Alex . . !

Oh Alex and George, lol. These are
very awesome pictures for sure. I
love old cemeteries. I've never
been to this one or the one off of
41.

This so worth a visit. I went many times with Jack
Treganowan from Eagle River..
I visited the Methodist Chapel at Central in 2001
and 2007 with Holman Climax Male Voice Choir from
Cornwall.
The Keweenaw is a very special place for those of us
from Cornwall. The wildlife and fishing is just
amazing..sadly my visits have had to come to an end.
