The Delaware Copper Mine is located in Grant Township, which is in Keweenaw County. It’s south of Copper Harbor, Michigan and is a Keweenaw Heritage Site. They provide tours of one of the oldest copper mines in the Keweenaw, dating back to 1847 and operated until 1887. H Donn de Yampert recently visited the mine and said, “$14.00 buys you a ticket to the past, wandering the dark caverns without being rushed. A good value hike down under.” He shares some photos from his trek down the caverns, tunnels and drifts underground.

Visit Keweenaw chronicles the Delaware Mine story in today’s video, including the lead-in of how Keweenaw History became a family legacy:
“For one young boy, a childhood steeped in Copper Country mining history spun together intrepid fantasies of one day laying claim to his own copper mine. Not one to let dreams lay idle, Tom Poynter became a man with a singular dedication to his childhood mission, eventually rediscovering the Delaware Mine and revitalizing it to become a destination Copper Country mine self-guided tour. His vision lives on in his family, as now his daughter Laurie Sullivan and her husband Bob have taken on this family legacy. With an eye to the future, the Delaware Mine continues to see new innovations to the grounds and its educational features. The Sullivan's have found a new sense of community in the Keweenaw as they welcome resident and visitor, young and old, to the ever growing story of the Delaware Mine.”

I know there is so much history
with mining up here, but it just
isn't something that I'm into.
They scare me. The pictures are
very cool, though.

Great photos from inside the Delaware Mine. Last time I took the tour, the bottom level was much more dimly lit with a small bulb only every 100 feet or so. And the flash was useless since the humidity was so high. Still a great experience though. I'm sure Deb that you would like it even less.

Did it on Halloween one year, decades ago...they
had ghosts and ghouls in there...

Exciting set! I’m a wee bit claustrophobic
but I’d chance a tour since I have a cure
for claustrophobia.
I also like the enthusiasm and genuine
passion that Laurie and Bob have carrying
on a family tradition.
