One of H Donn de Yampert’s latest adventures took him to Redridge where he snapped some photos of the old wooden dam which is also referred to as the Redridge Dam Falls and the steel dam, too. While most dams don’t make good waterfalls, Redridge Wooden Dam is an exception. The original timber crib and earth still stands there, behind the Steel Dam structure and it still holds back the water from a large reservoir, with water pouring over and through the wood, forming a nice set of cascades.

The Steel Dam structure is no longer in use, but is thought to be one of only three such dams constructed in the United States, as steel is a relatively rare material for dam construction. Typically dams are made of concrete, masonry or earthenworks. This dam was finished in 1901 and created a reservoir for the downstream Atlantic Stamp Mill in the Redridge area, allowing the ore trains to cross the Salmon Trout River. Interesting history and also quite neat that it’s still there to check out over 100 years later.

Next we’re joining Kristin Ojaniemi for an episode of Discovering where she features Dean Juntunen who completed his lifetime goal of kayaking the entire Lake Superior Shoreline, being the first paraplegic to do so. She also has a story about netting and pickling suckers, which she says is one of the most entertaining fishing stories she has filmed. So settle back and enjoy the episode.

Hi
The video story about the man who, with time and
help, paddled around Lake Superior was very
interesting. He took some beautiful photos too.

Awesome pictures. We've gone
exploring there during the autumn
colors. I had never been and i
thoroughly enjoyed it.

That is one awesome video. That took serious SISU
to paddle that lake as a paraplegic. Wow.

And pickled sucker is good..and I don't
particularly care for fish.

Hey! Those looked like some mighty big Smelt!

After watching Dean, my ailments seem small.
