Last week one day, George C. Bailey made a mini-tour of the Keweenaw, stopping and snapping photos of places you’re familiar with if you have visited in person or by photos here on the Pasty Cam. George starts us off at Lake Medora with a single fishing shanty out there on the ice. The little island to the right of the shanty has always been a favorite of mine. Not sure if it’s still there, but a number of years back when I kayaked around that little island, there was a picnic table there.

Next stop is Lac La Belle. I’m not positive, but I think this is to the right of the marina and docks. You can see the row of cottages/homes along the right side of the photo. I’ve always thought it would be a wonderful spot to have a summer place.

From around the same spot as the previous photo, but in a different direction, we get a look at Mount Bohemia. Not being a skier, I’m not certain if there are “runs” on this side of the mountain or not. It sure looks high and steep in this photo.

Now George takes us out to the Mendota Canal, with a shot looking back toward Lac La Belle and another shot looking out toward Bete Grise Bay and the irons that line the entry to the canal. The blue of the water and the clouds in the sky are absolutely amazing in the second of these two photos.

And we end the tour with a look back at the Bete Grise Bay. If I’m not mistaken, the humps on the left are part of Bare Bluff. Quite the view to the tip of the Keweenaw from there. Thanks, George!

With today’s tour around the tip of the Yoop (U.P.), I figured this video form Harri Leigh Plotnick, about Yoopers would be a fun one to share, even though it’s a few years old.

Great tour George! Thanks for taking us along! Mendota Canal - Toward Bete Grise is my favorite - great detail and composition!

I’d comment, but it’s so cold my computer froze up.

Cool pics....GREAT vid. I love the guy says "people
want to be Yoopers, but you have to be born here!"

That's a big one....And that IS how it's done. You
have to be born U.P. here!

Nice pictures and I love that
area. It's so beautiful.

My husband does not like the rule
about having to be born here. He
loves living here but can never be
a true Yooper, lol.

Donna, More specifically, it is called a natural
born Yooper, as I was in 1950, in the Laurium
hospital.

The several parallel stripes along the Mendota Canal shoreline in the 5th photo are very interesting.

I'm surprised there's enough ice on Lake Medora.

Sounds like it's easier to "become" a Yooper than a Texan. I know several "Texans" that claim it requires a person be at least 4th generation to claim the heritage.

As far as population density goes, if the U.P. was it's own State only 6 others would have a lower density.

And to elucidate the Yooper status, there are
different levels of Yooperism, from basic to Premium
status. The gold star Premium Yooper has property in
the 906, speaks fluent Yooper including the
necessary 'Ya Hey', has been to Isle Royal, Mackinaw
Island, Brockway Mtn. and the Porkies. There are
levels between the basic and Premium but you get the
idea. Big Smile

WOW GREAT PIC'S and Mary your direction points are
spot on!!
The video is a hoot and yes, I know I'll always be
a Yooper wanna B!! But that's okay, I know where
my family came from and both sides of the family
as large as we are, are full blown Yoop's 95%
Finn's and I can speak Yooper just as well as the
natives. Ever heard of telephone time on the
radio, I can imitate it as well a genuine Yooper
calling in! I learned Yooper from my uncles at
lunch time at LB Deer Camp and just being around
them all for 65 years lol.
The 5th & 6th pics are my fav's!!
