When I saw these photos that Deb Simons posted, I had to share them. It’s one of my favorite places to go for a picnic on a hot summer day or even on a day when it’s not that hot. It’s not too far from Gay and it’s a great spot to put in your kayaks when Lake Superior isn’t all worked UP and wavy. Keweenaw County has picnic tables and grills there and the view is beautiful looking out across the Big Lake.

Just down the road from today’s park, Dr. Nat gives us a lesson on a rhyolite plug that records early volcanic eruptions that occurred in the Mid-continent Rift and Bare Bluff where there’s a good rhyolite plug example.

Great pictures Deb! And yes, the perfect spot for a picnic. I'd love to live in the brick house in the third picture.

Another fascinating vid by Dr. Nat. She has a wonderful way of explaining complicated issues in an understandable way.

Very nice pix and the Tobacco River Park
looks like a great place to alight.
Bare Bluff will always have a special place
in my heart…my first hike in the Keweenaw.

Thanks, Jbuck. I've always thought it'd be a
great place to live also. That's such a neat
little park. Only thing I don't like is
it's difficult to swim. But the views are
spectacular. The Huron Mountains were in
full view that day. And the lake was a deep
blue. Just gorgeous. And Ron always has to
walk under the bridge, checking for fish.

Yes, Dr. Nat is great at explaining this
stuff. She should write a book like geology
for dummies because of her explaining
abilities

Beautiful pics...And Dr. Nat knows her stuff. She
replied to me on a vid one time, that she uses
these vids for teaching her college classes!

Hi
I like the cairns (piles of stones) in the 4th
picture. I would see some at a park in Ann Arbor
when I used to live there. I joked they were the
work of either neopagans or art majors.

Beautiful pics and a very nice park. We drove
through there a few times during our short summer
stay this year.

Fall is right around the corner and it reminds me
of our deer hunting excursions, really 4 wheelin
and not much hunting. lol Way back in the day
when you could drive your truck back to the bluff,
it was an easy walk to the edge and the view is
just spectacular! But... I think my buddy Marty
may have caused that volcanic eruption and the
rift when we were cruising around up there. When
Marty smells pine trees.... well, let's just say
all bets are off! :=)) It's about time for he and
I to get those steel belts hummin north bound,
we'll see if we can make that happen.

Alex,

Bare Bluff was my LAST "big" hike in the Keweenaw.
I'm sure both our hearts were similarly affected.
