Debbie Jarve takes us to a spot in the Keweenaw that I’ve loved to stop at since I was a kid, the Devil’s Washtub. It’s a neat geological formation about 2 miles west of Copper Harbor and a great example of a blowhole in the Copper Harbor Conglomerate. When Lake Superior is riled up and wavy, it’s an exciting, actually a bit scary place to be as the waves splash and crash in the cauldron-like hole resembling a washtub. But when the Big Lake is calmer it can be a great spot for a swim, even passing through a lake arch of the rock out into the vast waters of Lady Superior. There have been years when the water is low, that you could see the bottom with no water in the tub, too. With all that being said and the many times throughout the years that we’ve stopped to see the Devil’s Washtub, I’ve never been brave enough to jump in and swim under that natural arch, but I’ve watched others do so on calmer days.

One thing that needs to be mentioned is that this formation in the Conglomerate rock is on private property, but the owners are willing to let people visit there, so if you know where to find it and make a stop to check it out, remember to be respectful so that they continue to share it like they do now.

Debbie and family were there on a relatively calm Lake Superior day, but with your volume turned up, you can still here the splashing of the waves in the Devil’s Washtub. Enjoy!

stop with my son and daughter in law but it

My dad said he swam through the arch years ago near
Memorial day back in the late 50's. Seems like a
cold swim and a bit dangerous.

I've seen that thing dry as a bone. Way cool! It
was one year only...otherwise...that can truly
rock~!
