We have a first hand report on the International Bridge Walk from Sault Ste. Marie, MI, across the bridge to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Our own Jon Hopper and his daughter Elise took part it in this past Saturday. Jon had this to say about the event:
After listening to dignitaries and instructions we started out from Lake Superior State University, at 9 AM. We were initially going for a brisk walk on the bridge but when we were near the top of the first span Elise said she'd prefer to run so we ran the rest. We crossed Canadian customs at 9:30 not far behind the Law Enforcement Torch Run who led the procession. The distance of the walk was roughly three miles back to our car at the Marconi center. I believe we were the first non Law Enforcement Torch Run people to cross. We had the chance to chat with several other walkers and enjoyed the wonderful weather despite some forest fire haze visible in the pictures. This was the first bridge walk since 2019 and the organizers goal is to reinstate this as an annual event. It was a blast! 2.2mi from the US side toll booth to Canadian customs. It looks like the above ground bridge distance is 1.75 miles. Our trip measured out to 2.90 miles from the LSSU James Norris center where the bus dropped us off to our car at the Marconi Center parking lot back on the Canadian side.
I just want to add that Elise is 10, so that’s quite an accomplishment for this young lady to be the first to cross the bridge in this event, other than the organizers of the walk/run. That’s one proud Dad there in the bottom photo!
