Judy Byykkonen knows how to beat the heat here in the Keweenaw...she heads to the shores of Lake Superior. This day she was at the Gratiot River County Park. Judy said she loves this spot, as it is never real crowded and for some strange reason the water feels cleaner out there. She actually had a rather brief swim this day, the temperature out there was only around 60° (85° in town), so it was bone-chilling cold. It’s moments like that which Judy thinks back to when attending events in a crowded, venue with no air conditioning, she pictures the cool, clear Lake Superior waters and imagines a good dunk in it. Ahh...refreshing at least in her mind!

The girls love being out there on Superior’s shores, too and they even pose for Judy to snap a photo of them. An added bonus is that there are trails there to walk the dogs on.

Today’s video was produced in partnership with Visit Keweenaw and Quincy Aerial, featuring the Delaware Mine which operated from 1847 to 1887, producing a total of about 8 million pounds of copper during that time. Tom Poynter is the owner operator of the mine and shares what the experience is like when you visit. Added bonus to visiting on a hot Keweenaw day, the mine is nice and cool inside. Judy you such a busy beaver. Great pictures,
as always. And you are so brave to enter
that water before August, lol. We love it
out there also. Didn't know how the roads
are getting there.

It’s nice to see blue skies and water.

That is one of the most beautiful places on the
planet....Thank you Judy. Did you find any agates?

Back in the day, we'd jump in the lake to cure a
hangover and it worked every single time. lol Of
course, that was decades ago...

(Hey Lou! lol

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't believe that is an Omar. It looks too granular and light coloured to be one.

Speaking of rocks.... While enjoying my copy of "Michigan Rocks" i found this statement in the Acknowledgments in reference to Dr. Nat:
"Even while working on her own Mountain Press book project (New Mexico Rocks!), she never once complained and was always there to help with a smile and endless encouragement."

We have another interesting book to look forward to!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 - 08:02 pm:

Her book has been out for about a year now. We're currently working on another book in the series for Texas, and I'm doing the full colour revision for Roadside Geology of Texas.

Never a dull moment....

Oh! I didn't see Dr. Nat's book listed at Mountain Press or i would have ordered it at the same time!
