Cathy McKenzie and her hubby recently made the drive out to the tip of the Keweenaw with their friends as their adventure guides. It was a first time trip for the McKenzies out to the Keweenaw Rocket Range and High Rock Bay. Cathy said it took almost an hour to go a little more than 7 miles on the rugged dirt roads and the water holes to go through. She added that during the summer months it can be quite busy, but the day they went they had the place to themselves for the six plus hours they spent out there in the pristine beauty.

Toward the end of the day they enjoyed a campfire complete with hot dogs and brats on a stick, along with a little campfire music for entertainment. Luckily, Cathy recorded a bit of that, too!

Keep voting for Lake Superior as the Best Lake in all three categories.

Best Lake
Best Lake for Swimming
Best Lake for Water Sports.

Vote for the best lake in the U.S. once per day until polls close on Monday, June 5 at noon ET. No matter the outcome, we want to do our Big Lake proud.

Good morning:

Thank you McKenzie's.

The Keweenaw Rocket Range, do the railroad tracks go any where? Why are they there? A launch pad?

Weekday a great group of pictures. I just
love these. Maybe some day somebody will be
our guides going out there. We've never been
so maybe this is the year we'll go.

That video was awesome! What could be better
than a campfire by Lake Superior and some
good old Hank Williams music. Thanks, guys!

Going over to vote now.

I do not know where weekday came from in my
post. It was supposed to be what. Good
grief!

Still #3.

JT: The railroad tracks are just part of the launch
pad. It would be the world's shortest train ride.

How cool is that? I don't know about now, but back
when we took a spin....you HAVE TO HAVE A 4 WHEEL
DRIVE. This was decades ago.

I'd so love to get to Highrock. And be able to just
veg in the rocks.

Still #3.

Reading the Keweenaw Reporter:

New Yooperlite Exhibit at Mineral Museum

The A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum has announced a
brand new Yooperlite exhibit.

Yooperlites, or sodalite-bearing syenites, have
fluorescent properties that are found in abundance
on the shores of the Keweenaw. The sodalite glows
orange under UV light, so it’s easy to find them
when Yooperlite hunting.

The museum is open between 9a.m-5p.m Monday
through Saturday.

*If you've not been here...why? It's so
amazing....

Hi to All:

Thank you Gary, I have never been that far out on the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Thank you Cathy for taking me back to High Rock Bay. In 1975 and '76 I used to hitchhike to Copper Harbor, hike around the "Tip" and tent camp for a several days at a time. My favorite spot was Keystone Bay. It was much more desolate then.

I accidentally discovered this large, isolated concrete slab just north of High Rock Bay. It was SO curious. I thought to myself, "This would be a great place to launch some small rockets." There were no markers or documentation of any kind back then for the Rocket Range.

JT,
From 1964 to 1971 rockets as tall as 30 feet were launched up to 100 miles for various scientific experiments

Bob and I made this trip by snowmobiles. Quite an
adventure.

Thank you, Cathy, for taking us to a place i'd love to go to but never will. Beautiful!

I do have to say that if i ever did go and there were a bunch of people, that i'd be disappointed.

Just great pics & video!! Been out there so many
times to HR & RR by ATV, Truck and boat, it's a Must
Trip every year.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 - 06:27 am:

jbuck, there are times during the Summer months when
there are so many people out there, that you pass
them in and out on the two track, it's like a
highway of vehicles. Many folks camping etc... I've
been out there when I've seen more than 50 people
camping and just seeing the sights combined. When we
were there last year, they were putting in outhouses
for convenience and the environment, it gets that
busy.
