The ice is melting or moving out some on the South Entry of the Portage Canal. Taana Blom shares a few recent photos from a day that she says she was tempted to get her kayak out and do some paddling, but decided the photos here would have to do, as it was getting late. Her first photo is the Historic Coast Guard Station buildings across the canal. The property is privately owned now and is actually a VRBO rental. The rental page describes the property as follows: ”Come stay at the "Powerhouse" in historic White City, built in the 1930’s to supply electricity for the lighthouse that’s a short walk down the break wall. The Powerhouse was converted into a residence and sits on a secluded 16 acre property (mostly wooded) with 2 other houses (the powerhouse is the 1 story house in the middle).”

Taana’s remaining shots are looking out toward the Lower Portage Entry and you can see the Lighthouse there in the distance, also. The small island is intriguing, as there seems to be an abandoned small boat marooned on it. I’m betting that Taana has kayaked out there to check it out and maybe knows the background story to it being there. You can see there’s still quite a bit of ice out there behind the island, out into Keweenaw Bay. Hopefully, it won’t be long until all the ice is broken up and melted away.

We join Discover the U.P. for a look at the upcoming blue-spotted salamander migration in Marquette. Then we check out a conservation project on Au Train Lake to enhance fish habitat with fish sticks and brush bundles. And finally we learn a couple ways to clean with snow! So sit back and enjoy the episode.

Nice pix, I like the effect that the gray sky has.

And speaking of fish sticks, salamanders go great with ketchup.

So great to see that stuff melting. I think of
kayaking and then I think of how icy those waters
are. Nope!!
