The weather has been changing by the minute here lately with sunshine, clouds, spatterings of rain, high winds and then beautiful sunsets to complete the day. Taana Blom captured some of the dramatics from her Chassell Bay home on the Lower Portage Entry. Her first two shots show a cloudburst over the White City area, which looks like it’s raining from the middle clouds. Then a rainbow peeks out of several openings in the clouds in the next shot. Menacing, yet beautiful at the same time.

Taana’s last two photos were the sunset after the storms and winds passed by. It changed colors as it continued setting with hues of pink and then a burst of golden brightness above the dark below the clouds. Quite dramatic!

The time-lapse of the clouds that Taana made, wasn’t all that far from the actual movement of the clouds when the winds were at their highest. The clouds were moving fast, but not quite as fast as the speed in her rendition here.

The Isle Royale Queen posted on Facebook Friday morning that they will be canceling the rest of their 2022 season.

According to the post, the Isle Royale Queen IV needs a minor hull repair and under Unites States Coast Guard restrictions, they are unable to sail until the repair is complete.

The post says, “If you have a reservation with us, you have received an email about how refunds will be issued. If you have a loved one on Isle Royale, rest assured that we are working closely with the National Park Service to get those folks back to the mainland. They should be able to get off the island fairly quickly.”

My reading of the Isle Royale Queen IV circumstances is the hull damage restriction is in conjunction only when a small craft advisory exists, which this time of year is most of the time.

Small Craft Advisory for Great Lakes:
Sustained winds or frequent gusts between 22 and 33 knots inclusive (25 MPH & 38 mph), and/or seas or waves greater than 4 feet."
