Kathy Erkkila Ptaszek was recently on a quest for some farm fresh strawberries and said it was the perfect excuse to take a ride on the Covered Road. She stopped along the way to snap a few photos of this beautiful drive which is off the beaten path, but locally famous for the tunnel-like feeling of the tall trees surrounding the narrow dirt road that eventually leads you to Freda, the Redridge Dam and Lake Superior. It’s located west of Houghton on County Road S63 and is a scenic drive no matter the time of year. Kathy added that she sampled at least five of those berries along the way!

A special visual and sound treat is the video Kathy recorded on the Covered Road. Turn your speakers UP all the way for this one so you can hear nature’s beautiful song!

Is the covered drive kept open in the winter? I
always thought they didn't bother with it.

That IS a spectacular cruise!

Get better Alex.

Alex! So good to see your post! Praying everything is going in a positive direction.

Hey, UC, is the countdown to ONE now?

Great to hear from you Alex!

Love the covered road. I'm always tempted to hang a left to the fresh produce farm but it always seems to be near dusk.

Some time ago I was there and came head to head with an 18 wheeler logging truck. We both stopped as in the photo below. He kept flashing his lights and all I could think of was that old Steven Spielberg movie "Duel" where the semi kept hunting down Dennis Weaver.

In the end all the logging truck was doing was signalling me there was a passing area next to where he was stopped, LOL. There aren't many of the passing areas so I got lucky.

Duel

Great pictures! I love the covered road and
the whole area out there. It's just so
peaceful. And I could listen to birds
singing all day long.

I forgot to tell Donna that the covered road
is definitely open during the winter. At
least it used to be.

Alex, thinking about you and sending feel
better vibes your way.
