Bob & Liz Gilreath have had several interesting visitors to their Hubbell bird feeding station lately. First off, a Ruffed Grouse, commonly called a Partridge here in the Copper Country. That first shot of it, is my favorite, as it seems to be trying to run by quickly, maybe so it won’t be spotted. I have to say, we’ve never had a Grouse visit our feeders, so that was a first for me to see.
The next unusual visitor is a turkey. We have had a number of them visit our feeders in previous years. The way they got the bird seed was quite ingenious. When the snow was deep enough, they would jump and hit the bottom of the “milk jug” feeders we were using, until seed fell out on the ground. Clever system.
The last two photos from Bob, the Pileated Woodpeckers, are a bit more rare at feeders, but the ones featured lately are nearby the woods, not right in town, so those large woodpeckers must feel a bit more comfortable visiting for some suet. Bob’s first of the two woodpecker photos has two on the feeder at once, it almost looks like a mirror image when you first glance at it. Quite neat!
And to top it all off, while Bob was capturing photos of the birds, his wife, Liz pulled up in the driveway. He waved frantically at her from inside the house so she didn’t scare off the birds and then she was able to capture a video from outside, with bird sounds included.

I love their setup there. That is awesome. We've been trying to figure where to put our feeders in the summer. There are no trees in my mother's yard. I don't know why in earth she had them all chopped down, but we love trees, and so do our cats. I'll have to show Ron their ideas.
I haven't seen a grouse like that either. Back in our yard in Minnesota there were dozens of turkeys though. And I love those woodpeckers. We haven't seen them since winter hit. I even bought round peanut butter balls and a feeder for them. But the juncos are loving it and the balls don't melt. Not that there's any reason to worry about that around here, lol. Nice pictures. Thanks for sharing them.

I know...when I first saw the grouse...I wondered if it was "Pretty Bird"...
And it's mating season...that's the ONLY time you'll see two pileateds together on one feeder and you can tell the one behind is a female. Way cool! Great capture....
Awesome vid too!

Alex & Donna, i did the same thing! Reminded me of Pretty Bird but i think she met her demise a while back.
As far as I know, George, the grouse whisperer is still around, but I don't know if he's feeding anymore "Pretty Birds" now.
