We’ve had some warmer temperatures so the snow in Barbara Bouwkamp’s pictures has most likely melted a bit more, but this was what their Big Traverse camp driveway looked like just a week ago. Barbara and her hubby Tom had to snowshoe in and she said their dog, Willow sunk a few times following them to the camp. Then Tom had to shovel down to get the camp door open. Barbara’s last photo shows that there wasn’t as much of a buildup of ice on their Lake Superior shoreline. I find it so interesting that the different exposures of the shorelines make so much of a difference in how iced in it gets. I’m guessing the wind direction has a lot to do with that, also.

The video today was made the first week in February, but it just came on my radar this past week and I had to share it...this is the Mackinac Island Ice Bridge from St. Ignace to the Island, a 3.5 mile bike ride or snowmobile ride. With the warmer temperatures this may not be usable anymore, but still thought it was pretty neat. There’s a Disclaimer attached to the video: “Ride at your own risk. Do your own research. The ice condition is ever changing with temperatures fluctuating. Have the proper bike (studded tires preferred) and gears.”

That's what I call retirement.

Great photos captured of opening up in the
spring. Lots of work but so worth it.

As far as that bike trail goes, no darn way.
I'll take the ferry during the summer
months, thank you.

Great looking pics, makes me miss LB!!

As far as the video, pretty cool however, I'm with
Deb, no way!! Guaranteed if there's any open water
out there during that crossing.... my butt would
find it and I'm not ready for a swim yet this year
lol!!

I'm confused by what appears, in the video, to
be little pine trees in the middle of all that open
water--or at least, it will be in a while. Are
they placed there by someone? They can't possibly
grow in the location, can they?
Other than that, great video and wonderful
photos.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, March 27, 2022 - 08:02 am:

Dave, they do put them there so people know
where it's safe. I watched a program about
the island and that's what they said they
do. You know it's not open water then.
