The Gales of November came last Thursday, in a BIG way. Jodi Corrigan was out at Big Traverse to see the spectacle and snapped these photos. If you didn’t know there was a breakwall and irons there, you might not otherwise be able to tell, as they were pretty well engulfed in waves washing over and around. The winds were up to 30 mph and I don’t recall what the gusts or the wave heights were, but I know they had predicted 20 foot waves. Jodi commented that the irons probably filled back in with this storm. What she is referring to is the dredging that has been going on for the last couple years, to get the stamp sand out that has been washing up on the shore and over the breakwalls into the channel there. It seems to be a never-ending battle in this spot and this is just the first of many storms to come for the winter months.
Over on the eastern end of the U.P., Frances Czapski captured video of the waves crashing over Whitefish Point State Harbor breakwall on that same day. Frances said the gale was coming east-southeast, with 25-40 mph winds, along with 8-9 foot waves and added, “It was crazy!” Make sure you turn up your volume if you want to hear Superior roar. If you are deer hunting this season, know your target and what’s beyond it. Good Luck and be safe!

Great pictures! What a day that was. We didn't make it to Big Traverse, thought about it, but went right by to head to the Tobacco River. Then we made the circle around. She wasn't in a great mood that day, for sure. How lucky are we to be able to catch days like this, spending the day marveling at her moods. Loved the video also.

D.A., I have pictures of surfers at Great Sand Bay that day. The waves weren't as nasty on that side of the peninsula, but there were 2 of them surfing. Cool stuff to watch.
