Cathy McKenzie had fun playing tour guide recently, she said especially because her “tourist” was a first time visitor to the area. She brought him out to Gay, MI for an excursion, showing him what remains of the Mohawk Stamp Mill there. Cathy added that it was a beautiful sunny day to be outdoors, so that was a plus, also. Looking at her photos, there really isn’t all that much left to identify the site as a former mining location, except of course plenty of stamp sand, some pilings and concrete remains there and of course the smoke stack, which Gay is most famous for. We sure have a rich mining history around the entire Copper Country, which means there are plenty of mining remains to explore, some quite visible, others that you need a guide to find.
Dr. Nat gives another Geology lesson today, this time at Wetmore Landing outside of Marquette. If anyone knows where the mining locations are, I’m guessing that Dr. and Capt. Paul do. Maybe they should start a guide service on the side.

I love walking around the Gay Sands as well as
the sands in Freda. The pictures were great.
I think Nat is probably a very good teacher.
Thanks for the lesson.
