Bucky’s (a.k.a. Calumet Waterworks Park) is truly a Keweenaw gem and also a great place to find Keweenaw Gems. Barbara Bouwkamp was there in the evening recently to do a bit of rock hounding and also to hopefully catch the sunset. She was successful on the sunset part, but didn’t say whether she found any “Superior Gems” or not. Still, though, I’d say she had a successful adventure even if she didn’t find any cool rocks.
I looked back in the Pasty Cam archives and found this little gem of information and thought it worth sharing again:
From David S. (Yooperdfs) on December 30, 2011, I wonder how many people know what Bucky’s actually means. I DO. Back in the 50's and 60's there was a little candy/ice cream store at the park and was run by 'Bucky' O'Connor (sp?). I believe he worked at a bank in Calumet and would open his shop at the park in the Summer evenings. It was Americana at it's best; long, peaceful summer evenings at the lakeshore with patrons driving up to the stand for a cone or other treat. Bucky would be leaning on the counter making small talk with the loyal locals as the sun set over the big lake. I believe he passed away in the 80's and the store is long gone now, but the memories...
Let’s go agate hunting with a nephew and his uncle at Calumet Waterworks Park. Great way to spend time with family!
