Josh Rheault was at Presque Isle in the Porcupine Mountain State Park and not only spotted a flying squirrel, but actually captured it in flight! I always thought these critters were nocturnal, but I guess this one didn’t get that memo. How exciting to have caught that flight on camera like that. Josh’s remaining shots were in the trees and I have to say, it looks more rodent-like than a normal, everyday red squirrel.
I did a little investigating and found that there are two species of flying squirrels in Michigan. The northern flying squirrel inhabits the northern Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula, while its close relative, the southern flying squirrel inhabits the southern Lower Peninsula. Interesting...
Judy Byykkonen was out exploring the woods near Calumet recently and found this pretty, little waterfall, which is more common during Spring in the Forest here in the Keweenaw. Make sure you turn up your speakers so you can listen to the spring melt as it is running to the lake.

I know of a guy that got one, skinned it, tacked it to the wall above his bed, went to sleep and woke up the next morning with fleas! lol

In all my years of stomping thru the woods i've never seen one of these critters - in flight or otherwise. Thanks Josh!
