Yesterday, we had a rainstorm come through with predictions of half dollar size hail and high winds. Here in Lake Linden, we didn’t see the hail or the high winds, but we had heavy rain, along with thunder and lightning.

Our first photo was snapped by Fred Koski, from Fred Koski Photography. The lightning flashing over Lake Superior is amazing and the color of the sky outstanding! This shot was from a storm earlier last week, which Fred expertly captured, stopping the storm for a moment in time.

The other 2 photos, were from yesterday’s storm, before the rain, thunder and lightning arrived. The cloud bank was our warning of what was to come. When I snapped these photos, it was dead calm out there, you can tell by checking out our flag, which we lowered in anticipation of the predicted winds, so it wouldn’t whip in the wind and damage the flag pole, it was hanging there just limp. Shortly after the photos, the wind began picking up and then the rain started. Thunder and lightning followed that, along with our satellite dish going out due to the heavy rain. But all in all, the storm for us here in the Copper Country wasn’t as bad as the weatherman predicted.

We’re talking a trip from Hancock to Houghton in today’s video, under clouds, with a bit of blue sky, too.

Missed this last night as strong storms were racing thru our area too. Hope all Pasty Camers are safe & well this morn.

So glad we left a day early and missed the derecho that slammed Iowa yesterday, otherwise we'd have been caught in it.

Dramatic, well defined scenes!

Bad weather everywhere!! Yesterday afternoon my son called from his job as a 911 dispatcher to tell me a bad storm was on the way. Yea, yea. VERY shortly thereafter there WAS. Here in northern Illinois and east-central Iowa we had 100 mph winds and I don't mean gusts. It only last 20 minutes but I now have a much greater appreciation for those in hurricane zones. Sure we have terrible tornadoes around here but they don't take out nearly an entire state. Our power company estimates 850,000 customers (not people) are without power (me included) and it will take "several" days for repairs. I drove around to places I could get through and maybe 5% to 10% of the gas stations were pumping, all with huge lines. I'm guessing Janie T. was affected as well. I have a generator so I need to go out now and find some more fuel.

The same storm was barreling down on SE-MI, but we
dodged the bullet...it fizzled out coming across
from Lake MI, didn't see a drop.

It was a very strange storm Alex. No thunder and lightening and very little rain. Or maybe I missed it 'cause it was travelling so horizontally, LOL. After it went through here I noticed the national radar map showed the cold front of storms really widened up extending from the norther Lower Peninsula all the way almost to Kentucky.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 - 08:01 pm:

So D. A. (Midwested), did you find gas for the generator?! Hope it isn't long before they have your power back on. There was a lot of rain here but more wind!

By D. A. (Midwested) on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 - 08:41 pm:

Yup. Only had to wait in line about 45 minutes. Not too bad. There's a certain panic that seems to sometimes set in but everyone was cordial today. BTW, the line at the open Taco Bell was WAY longer, so priorities are what they are I guess. Maybe the pandemic has provided good practice when the TP hoarding occurred.

I can now keep my generator running 12-14 hours a day for about 4 more days. The frig and freezer can "coast" for the remainder of the night and everyone can sleep. Hopefully it won't be that long. Back in 2008 we were out for 8 days.

Haven't heard from Janie T. Her Cedar Rapids, Iowa area was also hit really hard, but she lives "out in the country" so I think they've become pretty self sufficient.

My generator and fuel worries are actually quite trivial. I'm simply trying not to lose a freezer full of meat (after I pandemically hoarded all that beef, LOL) and maintain a few creature comforts. Just glad it's not the middle of winter.

So, Jbuck and D.A....you both mentioned gas and Taco Bell, how am I supposed to interpreted that?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 - 09:25 pm:

Alex, gas is always a concern for the generator, if you don't have one of those whole house units! But i don't recall mentioning Taco Bell! The long lines here are at Culver's!

By D. A. (Midwested) on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 - 09:53 pm:

I guess I should been hoarding Taco Bell and filled my freezer with that. And as Alex points out, if you have a gas fired generator the Taco Bell could serve double duty. Or should that be double doody?

Looks like my first post today was eaten by my intermittent internet.

I really enjoyed riding down the Quincy Hill into Houghton again today. Even though there has been considerable change in town and substantial progress has occurred it's nice to see how that route is still so much the same as it's been for decades.
