Mary Schmitt said she was leaving her driveway after one of our recent snowfalls and noticed that her yard was filled with leaves that were still falling. Upon a closer look, she said they all seemed to be standing at attention, so she had to snap a photo.

The second photo is similar, taken by Kathy Archambeau who commented that this is what happens when the snow arrives early around these parts. There are still leaves hanging on, especially oak leaves in her area, so they're falling to decorate the white landscape with a bit of color still. Looks like the two seasons couldn't wait, so they collided together.

The seasons here in the U.P. take on many different moods. Today's video shows us six minutes of the many moods of the Upper Peninsula from Fall to Winter in the Marquette area.

Who was that masked man?
Or, for that matter …
Where was that masked man?

White horse, white hat, abundant white snow, no see-um Lone Ranger, but hear-um Swiss Soldiers. (§)

[§ The William Tell Overture, finale: March of the Swiss Soldiers. (In part.)]

The term "intellectual" has been defined as "a man who can listen to the William Tell Overture without thinking of the Lone Ranger".

Indeed this has been an Autumn for the record books, record early cold, heavy early snow and all before the trees got the message. My oak trees are finally losing their leaves as well and most of the leaves are STILL GREEN.

By Donna (Donna) on Thursday, November 21, 2019 - 09:19 am:

Oaks are always the last to drop their leaves.

I'm sooooooooooooo thrilled you went back to the
"old" way of doing this page...I don't know when
you did, but it hit me last night, and I am
thrilled! Thank you!

And our Beech trees, sometimes hold their brown leaves, especially the lower half or third, until very late Winter

Why does it feel like January already? The nicest part of the video was the end, which gives me hope. Has anyone seen Tonto???

By D. A. (Midwested) on Thursday, November 21, 2019 - 12:23 pm:

I read somewhere that deciduous trees are actually in the process of evolving into evergreen trees. Probably a million year process (or more) but I could swear that 35 years ago my oak trees used to shed all their leaves in the Autumn. Now they hang onto 1/3 of them until Spring. If the evolution claim is true then it looks like Oaks are just further along than say Maples.

By George L. (Yooperinct) on Thursday, November 21, 2019 - 01:20 pm:

That's an interesting point, D.A. about the oaks. We're in the woods here in northeast CT and the red oaks lose their leaves right after the maples. Then it's the white oaks' turn, but curiously, some of those hold their leaves throughout winter while others lose them practically entirely.
