Somewhere around mid April, the Sandhill Cranes returned to the fields around our farm, but the most I’ve ever seen there are 4, maybe 6. If I counted right, there are 17 in this flock that Frances Czapski from the Whitefish Point Facebook page, captured flying by. Frances said, “The Spring bird migration is on at Whitefish Point, Michigan! Yesterday I saw 2 groups of sand hill cranes flying over to Canada and a handful of hawks.” I can only imagine the cacophony that many of them made in their prehistoric sounding call.
In another migration of sorts, the Michigan DNR published a video of a Lynx being released in a forested area located in Schoolcraft County. Here’s what they posted about the release and what led up to it:
Back into the wild – with a couple of glances to check her surroundings, a lynx discovered in Sanilac County was released in the UP. The lynx, determined to be a young female, was captured following reports of odd behavior. She was taken to the Howell Nature Center’s wildlife rehabilitation facility, then sent to the Detroit Zoological Society for a health evaluation. The DNR worked closely with US Fish and Wildlife Service and Detroit Zoological Society to determine a release plan.
