George C. Bailey was up late Saturday night, to capture the Aurora Borealis along the north shore of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Eagle Harbor Twp., west of Copper Harbor. Bonus for us Pasty Cam viewers, he also caught a myriad of stars in the photo, too. The colors are outstanding and I am astounded at the number of twinkling lights there are.

A day earlier, George spotted the Lee Tregurtha on Lake Superior, skirting the ice about six miles out, he said. I can only imagine how cold it must be out there on the Big Lake this time of year with the cold temperatures and winds blowing, not to mention all that ice chilling everything down even more.

Thanks to “Boat Watching in the Soo”, we have a video from last Tuesday, of the Great Lakes Freighter Saginaw up bound in an icy Soo Lock Canal. I heard that the ice has been coming in and out of the shipping lanes around Whitefish Point, with the shifting of the wind and has stranded a few freighters within that mass of ice out there over the weekend. Thankfully the USCG Cutter Mackinaw was working to clear a path for them to continue on their way.

I agree with Alex, that first pic is really beautiful!! The second pic and the video mean that the black flies and skeeter's are just around the corner, I can smell the campfire in my head already!! Can't wait to be in the Keweenaw, the question is.... will I be on vacation retired or just a week and back to work.... decisions have to be made by the end of the month!!
