Thanks to Visit Keweenaw, we get a look at a few of the Michigan Tech Snow Statues. From what I’ve seen, the statues are outstanding, as they usually are. The theme for the Winter Carnival was: “Dragons, Knights and Legendary Sights”. Winners from the Men’s Division: 1st – Phi Kappa Tau; 2nd – Tau Kappa Epsilon. In the Co-Ed Division: 1st - Alpha Gamma Delta & Sigma Tau Gamma. The Women’s Division winner - 1st - Alpha Sigma Tau. The bottom photo is the annual St. Albert the Great Catholic Ministry’s Ice Chapel at MTU. They celebrate several outdoor Masses in their Ice Chapel on the weekend of the Winter Carnival. Michigan Technological University shares a video with a closer look at some of the winners. The lead-in to the video says: “The Huskies created a kingdom for for Lancelot in a challenging snow statue competition during the Winger Carnival 2025, working with the “Dragons, Kinights and Legendary Sights” theme. Check out the winners in the month-long and all-night categories—with a round of applause for all participants! Nobody celebrates winter like Husky Nation. One of the biggest annual winter festivals in the nation, the beloved Michigan Tech tradition draws thousands of visitors to Keweenaw.”

Now that is embracing the weather ... and a whole lot of work!

How Winter Carnival gets covered in the "media" today is so much different than how we did it 50 years ago. It's clearly more advanced now from the consumer's perspective and much easier to produce and publish the pictures and reporting.
I took a lot of pictures of all of the events, along with other photographers of course. The Stage Reviews were held at the local high schools. I remember one year I had to almost run to get from campus to Hancock High on time. Everyone used to hitchhike back then but I had no luck.
Our darkroom was in the basement of the Memorial Union, next to the bowling ally. Just the bottom of the stairs, on the left, is a room that's had the door all covered in dry wall. You can't tell there's a room back there. I wonder if someone inserted some sort of time capsule. I hope so.
Much of the film was color as we published a full color large format magazine on Saturday.
It still looks difficult to capture good contrast on the statues. Good lighting is very important although I expect some cameras (even phones) that have high contrast modes called HDR (high dynamic rage) will take a better photo. Using a drone solves much of the problem and really adds to the presentation.

Nice set, but a sunny day really makes the artwork “POP”. Perhaps there are some sunnier days ahead.

Awesomeness!! And I'm sure the pictures don't do them justice. I just love that little church that they do every year. So very cool. The video was nice.

The whole works is so outstanding. I agree with Alex tho..needs a sunny day. Lou took me for a spin, and they are so awesome to see (just from a car),but pics didn't do them justice.
This is such a great year too...I LOVE dragons... (for you are small, and taste good with ketchup!)
The church looks so awesome too.
