Brita Haapala took advantage of a recent morning to head to the shores of Lake Superior for a sunrise capture. What a beautiful winter sunrise, with the reflection on the Big Lake and the ice coating the shoreline. I can imagine the sound of the water lapping at the border ice and the crisp, cold morning air, pure Copper Country winter!

The bottom two photos were snapped by Debbie Jarve on a recent jaunt to Eagle River to see the deer that congregate at the park there. Debbie zoomed in on two of them that were seeming quite cozy with each other and before she knew it, the one was giving the other a sweet deer kiss. Thankfully, Debbie had her camera ready and captured it perfectly. It doesn’t get much better than a winter sunrise and a Keweenaw critter kiss. Pure beauty for sure.

We wrap up today with the bitter cold we’re experiencing in the Keweenaw at present. We’ve had below zero temperatures for the past couple days, with windchills in the negative 20’s and predicted to -30° windchill for today at times. Jeff Dennis recorded a video last night with the frigid temps and the deer on the shores of Lake Superior. This kind of cold is why it’s so important that folks are helping the deer to survive it, by feeding them like Jeff does.

Gorgeous pix!
I am a little confused by the
first and second pix; the first pic
is looking east, but the second one
appears to be looking west at a sunset???
And a very cold-cool video. The deer
don’t seem to mind the cold weather,
at least they don’t show it.

Beautiful pics...and the deer gotta eat no matter
the temp. I read where if it's pouring rain,
they'll hunker down. Otherwise...they'll be out.

I, too, am a little confused by
the direction, Alex. But they're
gorgeous pictures. And who doesn't
love deer pix?

By Alex - UP-Goldwinger (Alex) on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 - 02:26 pm:

Donna…that’s true. They hunker down
because the rain drowns out all the noise
and they can’t hear if any predators
are coming.

Hi
In that first picture, my thought was "I bet you
guys are COLD".

In the first deer picture, I see one of the deer
laid its ears back. In a horse, that can mean "I'm
angry"; I wonder if it's the same with deer?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 - 05:57 pm:

Ears laid back could also mean something behind has
caught their attention. When a horse is angry their
ears are pinned back against the neck tightly.
