Last week, Marquette received a 9” dumping of snow and 906 Images headed out to Presque Isle Park to snap some photos. He commented about what a difference a day makes and how the ice was starting to form on Lake Superior now, too. The Blackrocks are looking all frosted and I bet are quite slippery when coated with snow and ice. You wouldn’t have to jump in if you went out there under those conditions, as you’d probably slip and slide right in the icy waters. Yikes! Sure makes for some beauty on the shores of Lake Superior, though.

We’ve got some rock tumbling going on with Michigan Rocks here today, I suppose it’s much warmer to be inside working with the Lake Superior Thunder Eggs, than to be on the shores of the Big Lake looking for them. Fun to see the tumbling process that Rob goes through to get them looking all shiny and pretty!

Just a heads-up for anyone interested, starting this Sunday, January 19th thru the 25th, is National Sauna Week in the Copper Country.

From their webpage: "Founded in 2021 by Finlandia Foundation National (FFN), National Sauna Week is an American celebration that occurs annually near the end of January through February to build awareness and appreciation for the art of sauna and Finnish/Finnish-American heritage. Landing during the mid-winter here in the Keweenaw, this is a perfectly timed season for sauna-appreciation! Sauna Week in the Keweenaw features a self-guided tour of local homestead saunas, in-person and online events hosted by FFN,
local cultural events, and more!

And Sauna week...I remember waaaay back when, the
Grandparents did a weekly sauna and it was a big
"to do"...lots of visitors, coffee, goodies,
etc...Sauna is huge in the Finnish community.
Heikinpaiva is coming as well..Lots of happenings
with that!

From the Keweenaw Reporter:
The Hobby Horse Hoedown will begin this evening at
6 pm. The Hobby Horse Hoedown has become a
favorite event. Especially for families in the
community. Hobbyhorsing sports started in Finland,
which combines equestrian competition events and
crafting skills. In Finland there are
organizations like the Finnish Hobby Horse
Association and Finnish Hobbyhorse Competition
that organize the fun and accessible sport for
children and adults.

Sunday starts Sauna Week in Hancock. Then next
Friday Club Finndigo will screen the Winter War
and an optional traditional Finnish dinner. And
Heikinpaiva starts on the 25th at 10 am. Copper
Country Finns and Friends invites all residents of
the Copper Country to enjoy a winter day and fun
activities throughout Heikinpaiva events.

Great pics from 906.

I was looking for the one where a 906 member took the leap. Maybe if there was a sauna on Presque Isle?

No sauna life is complete until you've experienced the traditional "smoke" sauna. In my several trips to Finland while I was working I only "had" to experience it once. That was enough. I do like the modern form though.
