The head of the bay between L’Anse and Baraga has had some interesting ice formations of late. Nancy Haun spotted some “blow holes” on the shoreline below the Bishop Baraga Shrine one day and then the next day the bay was filled with “pancake ice”. That’s quite an expansive view from the Shrine grounds, you can see out in the bay, forever.

So, in case you don’t know, a “blow hole” is a hole in the ice that forms when waves break through from below and then waves splash up through the hole. They’re a good indication that the ice underneath may not be stable, so it’s a good idea to stay off them. “Pancake ice” is floating, circular ice that forms on the Lake ranging is size from 12 inches up to 10 feet across. Again, this is not a safe ice formation to go out on and like the blow holes, are just neat to observe them from afar.

Yes, I'm ultra-cautious about going out on ice on
the Great Lakes (which is another way of saying I
don't do it). But it is nice to look at.

In the video, I noticed some golden streaks that I
finally figured out were steam from heating systems.
