H Donn de Yampert was up early in the morning to catch the Michigan Tech Girl’s Rowing Team practicing with the sun coming up on the Portage Canal. What a neat sight this is with the boats all lit up and the sky just brightening with the sunrise, not to mention the lights glowing brightly on shore. The calm water was a bonus all around, with barely a ripple on the surface, I imagine it made for some smooth gliding along the waters of the canal. I wonder if you could hear their cadence or count echoing as they were rowing? The bottom photo is actually the waterway that leads to the MTU Rowing Docks. That’s a neat shot, also, with the circle down the end of the waterway and all the lights of the homes and buildings surrounding it. Just all around great aerial photography!

The video was recorded by Zach Halkola who’s son is one of the young men on the MTU Men’s Rowing team featured in the clip and that’s Dad cheering them on! Go Tech!

What awesome pictures! How lucky
for these young ladies to be out
in the water when all this is
happening. Nice shots.

The video is cool too. I was never
interested in rowing until I saw
the movie about the Washington
rowing team who won the gold medal
at the Olympics. They go through
so much. Hats off to these young
people.

Those are just outstanding pics...and that video is
just awesome!!

H Donn de Yampert...the best thing that happened to
Pasty is YOU retiring! Thank you for these great
pics...

Hi
Wow, what beautiful shots. I'd never seen the boats
(sculls?) with lights. When I lived in the Ann Arbor
area I used to see rowing teams on the Huron River
but they always practiced in the daylight.

Very cool! I'm pretty sure the Wildcats don't even have a rowing team! And we won't even mention the football team......

Really beautiful pics and nice video.

Jbuck, I also do not know if our Cat's have a
rowing team?? I'm trying to think what lake or
waterway they would use. I don't think they could
use any part of Lake Superior to where it would be
calm enough to train and compete. Not even around
the back side of Presque Isle.
I had to laugh out loud when you mentioned our
football team, they are so bad. It looks like the
Volleyball team is respectable. It seems like we
have teams but not the effort to have the best
coaches etc.... It'll be interesting to see what
type of Hockey team they put on the ice this
season. I realize we're a smaller school, but I
have to say, it's been quite disappointing for
years with regards to the major sports we
participate in. Especially in our only Division
One Program, Hockey. I hope life is getting better
for you Julie, and that you're able to smile more
often, Wildcat Sister!! :-)

Nice set and perfect conditions for
rowing. Perfect for the Olympic Game's.
The colors of the horizon
in pix one and two are inspirational.

Good point, UC. Superior wouldn't be a good option. Maybe the Dead River Basin would be big enough.
