We have a variety of photos in today’s Keweenaw collection from Debbie Jarve. Once again we benefit from Debbie’s early start time where she works on the Portage Canal, with the first two shots. I don’t care how many times you photograph the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, there always seems to be something that catches your eye each time. Today’s photo has a bit of fog in the early morning hours and it adds an other worldly look to The Bridge. Just Perfect! And then the reflection photo of the historic mining buildings in Ripley, across the Canal. It’s one of those “mirror images” that you could turn upside down and not even notice it’s inverted. Quite unique!

Debbie’s remaining photos were snapped after she finished work for the day and was headed home. A stop at the Swedetown pond was in order, to see what kind of wildlife she would find there. She wasn’t disappointed with the pair of Ring-Necked ducks that were swimming around. Such distinct markings on the male, from its bill, all the way to his tail. Nice captures!

And who doesn’t love butterflies and lilacs, it’s kind of a classic photo, this one with a Swallowtail Butterfly. Since I love the scent of Lilacs, I wondered if butterflies can smell. The Internet gave me the answer of course: “Each butterfly or moth has thousands of finely tuned smell and taste receptor scales, bristles and pits. These are located on its feet, on its palps (mustache-like mouth-parts) and on its antennae.” So there you have it, they smell and taste with their feet and antennae. Isn’t nature amazing?

We’re here again with a video lesson from Visit Keweenaw. This time Keweenaw Land Trust Botanist & Program Manager, Jill Fisher, shares some insight on how visitors can protect and enjoy nature areas while exploring the Keweenaw. She talks about how to explore and be a good steward while out in nature, such as staying on the trails and leaving no trace, which will ensure that these beautiful natural areas stay accessible for us and preserves nature for years to come.

How stunning. Decades ago, while out cruising, we
hit Lake Bailey, and someone had spilled some pop
on the rocks. It was covered with the
Swallowtails...it looked like a bouquet of
butterflies...of course, that was prior to digital
cameras. (boy..that'll age you!)

What a great set today. I never
get tired of those first two
scenes. Total Copper Country
beauty there. Love the ducks, too.
And for sure, I never tire of
butterflies and lilacs.

Hi
Beautiful pictures, & hopefully cool in the UP.

Bird names often seem a bit odd to me; I thought
"Where's the ring on the duck's neck?" So I looked
in my Peterson's field guide for an explanation;
it said
"The name Ring-billed Duck would be much more
appropriate, as an examination at very close range
is necessary to be aware of the dull chestnut ring
that encircles the neck".
Sorry, but even with Debby's nice close-up I don't
see it.

If you have Charter, right now, channel 489, STORY
TV is talking about the Edmund Fitzgerald. They
said it was "cursed" to begin with. The lady
trying to break a bottle of champagne on it, had
to hit it 3 times. THEN it went off into the
water, a little wrong, and threw up a huge wave.
THEN, one of the fellas there, dropped dead from a
heart attack.

They said the locals say 'The Witch of November'
when talking about Superior!

Back on..gotta go...this is interesting!
