Beth Jukuri was quite excited to discover a pair of Trumpeter Swans and their flock of Cygnets in the slough on their property in Chassell. She said this is the first time they’ve had the babies there and remarked how protective the parents are, so Beth is keeping her distance. One of her friends told her a story about years ago when they went to a dog park with their son’s dog. There were swans there with babies and they actually tried to choke their dog when it got too close. She said they have very strong necks and are quite mean when they are protecting their babies, so Beth said she’s staying far away from them to be sure!
We have a video from Robert E. Fuller with Cygnets hatching. You can watch the very first swan cygnet hatch out and see how mom turns the eggs as they begin to crack open. This is a Mute Swan, not a Trumpeter as in Beth’s photos above.

Beautiful....I googled if they are related to geese..cause they sure get mean too...
"Swans are grouped with the closely related geese in the subfamily Anserinae where they form the tribe Cygnini. Sometimes, they are considered a distinct subfamily, Cygninae . There are six living and many extinct species of swan; in addition, there is a species known as the coscoroba swan which is no longer considered one of the true swans."
What wonderful pictures! That 4th one is my favorite. Very nice, Beth!!

Superb swan pix that I find very relaxing. The video is great too…and be sure to FULL SCREEN it. The feathers on the swan look heavenly soft and warm. Nice set Beth and Robert!
