Eric Hermanson and his wife, Marcy recently made an afternoon hike to a different overlook on the Cliffs near Phoenix. Different meaning a view from UP there we don’t often see. They drove up a dirt road between Phoenix and Eagle River and then hiked through the woods to the overlook where they could get a good view. You can see from his photos it was a beautiful day as they hiked through big pines, mossy rock outcrops and scenic gullies. They even brought a pack’n go meal of subs for a picnic with a view. Looks like a perfect way to spend the day!

In The Keweenaw is taking us on an early May drive to Copper Harbor on US41, the Covered Road, which actually wasn’t covered yet, since the leaves weren’t out. Buckle UP and enjoy!

Nice day, nice hike and nice lunch!
I haven’t had a Fresca in years.
Thanks for taking us along.

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, May 20, 2024 - 10:11 am:

Beautiful pictures, and great view!~
I wonder how close they are to Elmo's Tower?

Sub looks awesome, and I've not seen Fresca in forever!

Wished we could have gone with you
guys. When we went with you last
fall, I could barely make it the
Phoenix church. So that's cool.
Love these.

Beautiful pics & video. Marty and I did the same
thing last Fall winding through the trail to the
top of the Cliffs. Fun area to explore. About 60
seconds into the video was where I spent a lot of
my time in the Summer on Lake Medora with my
cousins. I wouldn't mind having some property on
the back side of that lake. So peaceful and so
beautiful.
As far as the Fresca goes... I too have not seen
that in years. I think it has grapefruit in it if
I'm not mistaken. Can't have that I've been told
because of one or more of my meds, I guess if I
drink it, it will turn me into a sasquatch or
something like that! :=))

Getting to the top of "The Cliffs" has been on my bucket list for 50 years.

Uncle Chuck,
I need some help, maps, directions?

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Monday, May 20, 2024 - 11:40 pm:

D.A. we just had a full tank of gas in Marty's
Nissan Frontier Pro 4X, mid-size truck and
navigation, some provisions (Vollwerth's &
water/diet cokes) and plenty of time to get turned
around up there, which is easy to do. I was really
surprised how many trails there are up there,
especially blazing trail to the north shore after
entering off of 41/Cliff View roadside. Some of
the two track trails on the backside were so
tight, I would not try it with a 1/2 ton or larger
truck unless you don't care about a few U.P. pin
stripes. lol

By D. A. (Midwested) on Monday, May 20, 2024 - 11:58 pm:

Thanks,
but which location was your entry point to begin?

Which highway or county road?
Location of turnoff?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 - 07:53 am:

I meant to say that I could barely
see the Phoenix church from where
we were up there. You can tell
that this is a different view of
it. I did get some pretty cool
shots of it through the trees,
though. It was very exciting to be
up there. We may take the side by
side up there this year.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 - 07:56 am:

D.A., you can get up there from a
road that's just a little past the
10 foot falls stop. It's a nice
road and takes you right up there.
You can only go so far and then
you have to hike it.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 - 01:06 pm:

We went in from the Cliff View road about half way
down from where it starts past Allouez and before
you get to the end near Phoenix. Drive in keep going
to the right as you climb higher, we drove the whole
way.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 - 01:12 pm:

Started at Ahmeek, is what I meant to say, sorry

By D. A. (Midwested) on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 - 03:21 pm:

U.C.,
Is that entry point the place very close to the mine, where you almost immediately ford the river? I was always worried it might be too deep. There appears to be 2 other possible entry points further towards Ahmeek.
Cliffs

By D. A. (Midwested) on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 - 03:48 pm:

Deb,
I can clearly see on my maps, the access road you described near the Ten Foot Falls.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 - 03:52 pm:

D.A., it's a pretty good road.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 - 08:05 pm:

Yes, they were further towards back towards Ahmeek . We almost
challenged the water hole, but decided against it since we didn’t
have our lifejackets on lol but once you get in there and like I said,
start climbing towards the fire tower the roads are pretty good.
They do get a little bit tight for a full-size pick up to be had in a
midsize or a jeep type vehicle. The trails actually get a little bit
more fun as you ascend down the backside of the cliffs towards
Lake superior. Quite a few twisty turns at least the trails we were on
and at times I think we were blazing our own trails lol and that’s on
Diet Coke and beef jerky no alcohol lol
