Marcy Bessolo Hermanson and her adventurous friends, Cathy and Jennifer recently crossed something off their bucket list. Their adventure took them to a place none of them had been before, Point Abbaye, a small peninsula that juts out between Keweenaw Bay and Huron Bay, within Baraga County. It’s about an 11 mile drive in on a dirt road, which is always labeled as “rough”, but Marcy said the drive was way better than they had anticipated.

Once the hikers got out there, the beauty was something to behold. Beautiful blue skies and no bugs was the comment from Cathy! When you look to the left you can see the iron range of the Keweenaw Peninsula and to your right the Huron Mountains (in the bottom photo). One of the few places in the U.P. where both are visible. Well worth the effort to get there.

Today’s video is from Sparrow Outdoors who had this to say about it: “In Upper Michigan, there lies remnants of an abandoned Cold War era Radio Base deep within the woods. The Calumet Air Force Base is a fascinating remnant of American history in the defense against incoming airborne threats. The base stands at the highest point in the Keweenaw, still standing watch over the landscape it once protected. The base was not only a military installation, but an entire town dedicated to the servicemen and their families. Featured in this video is the history of the base, the infrastructure (including a bunker), and the infamous Kinross incident involving a potential UFO encounter. This video is meant to preserve the unique history of the base and to give a shout-out to the incredible Open Skies Project, LLC. who provided an incredible tour and the permission for us to capture the drone footage featured in this video.”

Never been there but it looks
amazing. Great pictures!

I heard they did some work to get out there, and
eventually want to turn it into a park. A long time
ago, my sis and I took a spin out there. BEAUTIFUL,
untouched land out there...right on Superior. It is
beautiful....

Vid is interesting. I remember as a little kid, my
Grandma having to call the base whenever anything
"weird" was in the sky.

Myself and another Coast Guardsman witnessed "something weird" too in the sky one spring night in 1971, driving back from Calumet to the CG Station (the old Station Portage next to McLain). Three large, very bright white lights out over the lake simply came on like someone threw a light switch. They remained motionless as we observed whatever it (or they) were for over five minutes. Absolutely no noise. Then, one by one, they went out. We called that air base but they were totally mum and claimed they'd seen nothing show up on their radar. Never found out what it was and will never forget it.

George…Mama always said that there would
be days like these.
Are you sure that these aren’t summer time
pix from last year? Who's zoomin' who?

I dunno Alex but they absolutely were not something like flares, and they didn't descend as flares would. And the local airport back then closed up shop after the Blue Goose airline landed for the day, so....whatever it was was definitely not any type of conventional aircraft. It was truly a haunting experience.

George, that is amazing and spooky as well. Somebody
knows what happened, you know that. Personally, I
think it was Da Yoopers out of Ishpeming, Flying
high again!! lol

It sounds like the road to Pt. Abbaye is now in better shape. It was VERY rough as I recall, a few years back.

If I heard correctly in the video, a group of Tech grads bought the radar base? Hmmm.

I definitely saw a UFO when I was a kid living in Grand Rapids, but I had never heard that a Bermuda Triangle of The Big Lake existed. WOW!
