There are advantages in having a drive to work in the morning, one being the scenes you see along the way. Chad Johnson snapped a couple this past week on his way into work. The Quincy Smelter, looking a bit mysterious with the fog and haze surrounding it as the sun is rising into the clouds above the smokestack there in Ripley. Amazing shot with so much embodied in it.

Then his second photo, a perfectly serene Portage Canal, reflecting the Michigan Tech campus, snapped from the north side of the Portage. This is one of those shots that you could invert and you wouldn’t be able to tell if it was right side up or upside down. It’s a beauty for sure!

Looking at the calm waters in Chad’s photo, reminded me that it’s not too far off from smelting season around these parts. For the last few years there has been an advisory about not eating more than one serving of smelt a month, because of PFAS levels. The following link talks about the studies and how the PFAS levels are lower than previously thought, but for now the state is not changing its advice to limit meals of Lake Superior Smelt and that changes could follow in a few months. You can read more about it here: Good news for Michigan Smelt Season

In this episode of Discovering, we join Kristin Ojaniemi and follow a 5-year journey to build a historic walking trail at the former site of the Sturgeon River (Worcester) Lumber Mill in Chassell. A dedicated group of volunteers, Chassell High School and Michigan Tech students plan, research and build a trail to tell the lumbering history of Chassell.

WOW!!! That shot of the Quincy Smelter is spectacular!!

That first one is just out of this world! WOWOWOW,
the second one is phenomenal too. GREAT pics!
Magazine worthy! (Hint)

Smelting is so in the past for me, but boy, we had
some good times. Haven't ate any in years. Good
thing I guess....I've heard those PFAS are already
in newborn's blood...that's so scary...

GREAT VID...I watched the show...so awesome...and
it's incredible, how the young folks are so
involved....it is just so wonderful.

Good luck U.C. All the best!! AND...where's
Alex??
